"Z" ombiesthaan Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

Image
Last year, I watched the Marathi film Zombivli and began to wonder why Bengali filmmakers had not explored the zombie genre. To my surprise, I discovered a Bengali film called "Zombiesthaan" just a few days later. I was astonished when I learned that this film, directed by Abhirup Ghosh, was made even earlier than Zombivli Synopsis The movie starts with a post-apocalyptic 2030 when a biochemical weapon has turned most people into zombies, leaving quite a few like our protagonist Akira, a young woman trying to survive. Her run from zombies leads her to a man called Anil, who saves her. An apparently relieved Akira slowly discovers she is in grave danger, as Anil reveals his twisted, sadistic side and intentions. She manages to escape and is captured by a violent group of human beings to be led to a mini-kingdom under Raja Haridas. Haridas, a dictator, leads a group of violent and unruly men, captures women and enslaves them. He also captures zombies for the heinous purposes of...

"Y"eti Obhijaan Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

Image
As a Bengali kid, I remember eagerly awaiting the annual children's special edition of the magazine Anandamela . It featured stories of our favourite characters created by renowned authors. One such character was Kakababu , created by Sunil Gangopadhyay . When Srijit Mukherji brought Kakababu to the big screen, everyone was thrilled. "Yeti Obhijaan" is Mukherji's second film featuring this character, adapted from the story "Pahar Churay Atonko." Synopsis The disappearance of a celebrated mountaineer prompts Raja Roy Chowdhury , known as Kakababu, and his nephew and assistant, Shantu , to investigate the situation at the Gorokhshep Plateau . With the help of a Nepalese police officer, Jung Bahadur Rana , they uncover serious illegal activities. However, their investigation reveals more than they expected, as they also plan to encounter the local legend of the Snowman, or Yeti . Review and Significance The Snowman, referred to as Yeti by locals, is a legend ...

"X"=Prem Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

The #BlogchatterA2Z challenge is becoming increasingly difficult as I searched for a Bengali movie that starts with the letter X. Just when I was about to lose hope, I discovered a film directed by Srijit Mukherji , titled "X=Prem," which I had never heard of before. I am truly grateful to director Srijit Mukherji for this find, as it provided me with the movie I will be reviewing today. Synopsis Khilat has lost the most valuable ten years of his memory due to an accident that occurred while he was driving with his fiancée, Joyee . As a result, he cannot remember any of his academic skills or achievements, which would help him secure a job. Even his romantic memories with Joyi have been erased from his mind, despite her best efforts to help him recall the beautiful moments they created together.  Khilat consults Dr. Kaufman , who suggests that he undergo a memory transplant. This procedure requires two donors: one individual with the same academic skills and achievements as ...

Here she comes! It's 6 o'clock and she just got up and now the first thing she will do is to try to find me at places that are unimaginable generally, like inside the cupboard, under the bed, but little will she notice that I am there at the usual place, her bedside table.  I won't budge because I enjoy playing this game of hide and seek with her. I feel justified in indulging in this mystery, knowing that no matter how angry she gets with me, she ultimately can't do without me. When she finally finds me, she lets out a sigh of relief, and I take pleasure in that realisation. It confirms for me that I am essential to her and that she can't live without me. I am there with her when she prepares her meals and when she reads her books. I stay by her side as she scrolls through her mobile phone or enjoys her favourite songs from the 90s. I accompany her during her walks and while she picks up her daughter from school.  Sometimes, she even gives me a cold bath, which I d...

"W" ater Bottle Bengali Movie Review #BlogChatterA2Z

Image
It took me some time to find a Bengali film that starts with the letter "W." After numerous unsuccessful searches, I remembered watching a Bengali web series called "Water Bottle," which is fortunately available in movie format on YouTube. Directed by Tathagata Mukherji, "Water Bottle" is a psychological thriller. Synopsis The story begins with a chilling prologue by the notorious serial killer Ted Bundy : "We serial killers are your sons, we are your husbands, we are everywhere. And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow." This sets the stage for the viewer’s journey into the world of Jyotileswar , a serial killer who has cold-bloodedly murdered six children and takes pride in his actions. In fact, he even invites a writer to document the details of his killings. The investigation is led by Mriganko , an eccentric yet brilliant cop, along with Subho , a newcomer in the police force, from a well-known political family. Together, they ...

"V" inci Da Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

Image
The letter V is tough to find in use in the Bengali language, as we don't pronounce V at all. So any word that starts with V is either pronounced as B or Bh in some cases. However, there is one prominent film by Srijit Mukherjee called "Vinci Da" and I am going to review it today for the 22nd day of the #Blogchattera2z challenge. Synopsis A brilliant and eccentric makeup artist, mockingly called Vinci Da due to his love for Da Vinci's art, finds solace in creating makeup for local club dramas. One day, he is visited by a strange man named Adi Bose , who offers him the opportunity of a lifetime: to create realistic masks of random people. Unaware of the true purpose behind this unusual assignment, Vinci Da dedicates himself fully to crafting the masks. However, he soon discovers that he is in grave danger. Adi Bose is actually a dangerous serial killer who uses the lookalike masks to impersonate corrupt individuals, committing heinous crimes while framing them ...

"U" Tsab Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

Image
Directed by Rituparno Ghosh , Utsab is the story of a joint family get-together during Durga Puja. I have chosen to review it for my 21st day of #BlogchatterA2Z journey. Synopsis Bhagabati's family has come together to celebrate their ancestral Durga Puja, a tradition that has been upheld for generations. Her two sons, Asit and Nishith , along with their two wives, her two daughters, one son-in-law, and three grandchildren, all gather for the festivities. However, due to difficulties in maintaining the ancestral house, they decided to sell it to a well-known builder named Shishir , a decision that all the brothers agreed upon. The elder daughter, Parul , opposes selling the house to this particular builder, while the younger daughter remains distant from the discussions. The film is set against a simple backdrop and focuses on each character's internal struggles and challenges. The revelations are subtle, flowing naturally with the story rather than being overly dramatic. Th...

"T" Ekka Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

Image
Last year, three major Bengali films were released, and Srijit Mukherji's Tekka was one of them. It is a "never-seen-before" thriller that captivates audiences. Today, I have selected this film to review for my #BlogchatterA2Z challenge. Synopsis Iqlakh Alam is a janitor struggling to make ends meet. He has a son but cannot afford to provide him with a basic education due to a lack of funds. After being laid off from his job due to inappropriate behaviour, Iqlakh devises an unthinkable plan for revenge. He kidnaps a random schoolgirl and takes her to the office where he used to work. What unfolds next leaves everyone spellbound as two TV reporters secretly start filming the entire incident. What drives Iqlakh to commit such a shocking act against an innocent child? Is his motive solely the loss of his job, or is there something deeper behind his actions? Review and Significance In Bengali, "Tekka" means "challenge." The story follows a poor, jobless...

A Note to "P.S. I Love You" #TBRChallenge

Image
Hi "P.S. I Love You" Let me be honest, I had watched the movie based on you, before reading you. Yes I was smitten by both the characters of Holly and Gerry, played by Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank ( I adore both as actors). But you, my love had taken my heart for being you. So even if there were no movies made, or  the movie was made with different actors, who I might have not taken a liking for, I still would have chosen you as my favourite. You are a class apart, an entire feeling that has no match. But you know what, I am still angry with you, why did you have to kill Gerry? Couldn't Gerry be saved or returned like soap operas! I still believe in miracles, and no matter how much angry I am with you, P.S. I Still Love You the Most. Warmly Jhilmil ( I would like you to address me with my pet name ) "I'm participating in the #TBRChallenge by Blogchatter"

Image
"Ek Ruka Hua Faisla" is a landmark film directed by Basu Chatterji . With "Shottyi Bole Shotyi Kichu Nei" ," Srijit Mukherji has paid tribute to this classic movie. For today's #BlogchatterA2Z challenge, I have chosen to review this film. Synopsis Brajeswar Dutta is a renowned judge who is celebrating his birthday at home. However, amid the festivities, his mind is preoccupied with a murder case involving a 19-year-old boy who has killed his older brother and awaits trial, which is under Brajeswar's jurisdiction. Throughout the film, the true nature of each character emerges, exposing the reality behind the facade of goodness, discipline, and other v...

"R" Aktabeej Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

Image
On the 18th day of #BlogchatterA2Z, I had a tie between two films starting with the letter R: Rajkahini and "R" aktabeej . Raktabeej won as it is a very recent release directed by Shibaprasad Mukherji and Nandita Roy. The movie is inspired by the true events of the 2014 Burdwan Blasts, which occurred during President Pranab Mukherjee's tenure. Synopsis President Animesh Chatterji has returned to his hometown to celebrate his ancestral Durga Puja, all under tight security. A blast at a firecracker factory reveals a more sinister plot, posing a threat to the President's life. In response, a team of dedicated police officers, led by IG Pankaj Sinha and accompanied by SP of Burdwan, Sanjukta Mitra , is assigned to ensure his safety and conduct the investigation. Meanwhile, at home, the President faces objections from his elder sister regarding his decision to reject a mercy plea from a terrorist. What unfolds is an action-packed, gripping thriller featuring stunning vis...

"Q" SQT Police Er Duty Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

Image
Finding a Bengali movie that starts with the letter 'Q' was quite a challenge for me today. However, I did manage to find one: "Q" SQT Police Er Duty. Unfortunately, this film is not available anywhere to watch, not even on YouTube. It aired in 2007 on erstwhile Tara TV as a short film, directed by Parambrata Chattopadhyay . I was fortunate enough to have seen it back then, and I remember it vividly, mainly because of its amusing title. Synopsis In a small hilly town in North Bengal, Sunanda is a determined police officer whose current obsession is to catch Lakai , a petty thief. Their pursuit leads to a hilarious cat-and-mouse chase throughout the region. The question arises: why is Sunanda so intent on capturing Lakai, despite the many important cases she could focus on? The answer is revealed at the end, making it the most enjoyable part of the story. It turns out that Lakai is a master player of the Naal, a traditional instrument, and Sunanda wants to be his di...

Image
"P" raktan, directed by Shibaprasad Mukherji and Nandita Roy, is a landmark film that reunites the former popular onscreen couple Prasenjit Chatterji and Rituparna Sengupta after 14 years. "O" pen Tee Bioscope Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

Image
There are very few coming-of-age dramas in Bengali films, and Anindya Chattopadhyay's "O"pen Tee Bioscope is a prominent example among them. Synopsis Phoara , a young boy, is expelled from his boarding school for fighting with the warden. His single mother, Boisakhi , brings him home to a cramped lane in North Kolkata. In this neighbourhood, Phoara befriends some local boys and joins a football training club run by Gopeswar Bhowmik . As he settles into this new life, he encounters various characters: true friends who are genuinely happy for him, his first love, and a teacher who encourages him to look beyond appearances. With their support, Phoara spends his youth pursuing his passion for football, ultimately growing up to become a renowned footballer. Review and Significance One might wonder why I have kept the synopsis of the film so brief. The reason is simple: it’s a film that must be experienced to be fully understood, as each character has their own story to tell....

"N" agarkirtan Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z

Image
When "N" agarKirtan was released, it sparked significant controversy over copyright issues. Author Swapnamoy Chakraborty initially claimed that the film was adapted from his book, "Holud Golap." However, after the film's release, he withdrew his claim. Fortunately, what we ended up seeing was a remarkable love story directed by Kaushik Ganguly—one that is seldom told. Although it may evoke memories of the characters' love in Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain," it is ultimately a very different narrative. Synopsis Parimal is a young man who feels like a woman trapped in a man's body. In search of acceptance, he leaves his home to join the transgender community in the city, adopting the name Puti. To fund his sex-change operation, he begins begging at traffic signals. During this journey, he befriends Madhu, a delivery boy and flautist. After overcoming some initial hesitations, Madhu falls in love with Puti and promises to help raise money for ...

He often mentions a woman named Mayurakshi , an ex-student of his, who he claims visits him frequently with music cassettes and other gifts. Intrigued by his father's renewed interests, Aryanil begins searching for Mayurakshi but faces challenges due to a...

Image
Kadam kadam badhaye ja,  Khushi ke geet gaye ja Ye zindagi hai kaum ki Tu kaum pe lutaye ja These powerful lines served as the anthem for the Azad Hind Fauj , which was formed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose . Bose, a courageous leader, took the bold step of creating an entire army to fight against British rule. His supporters affectionately called him "Netaji," which means "Respected Leader." Today, I pay homage to this great leader, who envisioned a strong and independent India, by reviewing the film " Gumnami ," on the 7th day of # BlogchatterA2Z , which is  directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Srijit Mukherji .
