"N" agarkirtan Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z
When "N" agarKirtan was released, it sparked significant controversy over copyright issues. Author Swapnamoy Chakraborty initially claimed that the film was adapted from his book, "Holud Golap." However, after the film's release, he withdrew his claim. Fortunately, what we ended up seeing was a remarkable love story directed by Kaushik Ganguly—one that is seldom told. Although it may evoke memories of the characters' love in Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain," it is ultimately a very different narrative.
Synopsis
Parimal is a young man who feels like a woman trapped in a man's body. In search of acceptance, he leaves his home to join the transgender community in the city, adopting the name Puti. To fund his sex-change operation, he begins begging at traffic signals.
During this journey, he befriends Madhu, a delivery boy and flautist. After overcoming some initial hesitations, Madhu falls in love with Puti and promises to help raise money for Puti's surgery so they can eventually get married.
What follows is a beautiful love story, albeit one that ends tragically.
Review and Significance
There are very few love stories that leave a lasting impact on us, and "Nagarkirtan" is one of them. The intense love between Puti and Madhu is beautifully portrayed, highlighting their deep understanding and patience for each other. Ridhi Sen delivers a groundbreaking performance as Puti, while Ritwick Chakraborty, as his lover Madhu, seamlessly complements the depth of Puti's character. This showcases the mark of a great actor: being able to make space for a younger performer to fully realize their potential in the role.
Kaushik Ganguly's direction is impeccable, with every detail meticulously placed. For instance, the conclusion takes place in Nabadwip, the home of Sri Chaitanya, who is often regarded as the reincarnation of the harmony between Krishna and Radha. The film powerfully depicts society's cruelty towards individuals with differing viewpoints, particularly in the last shocking scene. Additionally, there is an inspiring message from Prof. Manabi Bandopadhyay, the first openly transgender college principal.
I believe "N" Agarkirtan is a must-watch for everyone, especially those who advocate for the LGBTQ community. It serves as an eye-opener, revealing how unkind society can be toward those with unconventional thoughts.
