Top 3 Women Characters from Bengali Literature #MothersDay
A mother is someone who nurtures and cares when you need it; a mother is someone who scolds and is strict when you are weak; a mother is someone who stands tall and rigid when everyone else leaves.
If we get someone like this in our lives, she is our mother, guardian, and guide. Today, on Mother's Day, I am exploring a few powerful female characters from Bengali literature who have become iconic as role models of motherhood and womanhood. Not every character on my list is a mother, but their care and strength have been considered those of a strong woman with power and care.
1. Devi Choudhurani/Prafulla from Devi Choudhurani: This is one of the most powerful characters in Bengali literature. A young girl, abandoned by her husband and in-laws, is kidnapped by robbers and rescued by another group of bandits, led by Bhavani Thakur. She joins the bandits and later rises to become their able leader in fighting the British cruelty.
A simple village girl, who is considered a carrier of bad luck and omen, is transformed into a powerful leader and warrior who is capable of protecting the weak from oppression- the legend of Devi Choudhurani is nothing less than the Legend of Robin Hood. Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay brought this legendary character to life through his powerful narrative.
2. Subarnalata from Subarnalata: Ashapurna Devi has created some incredible female characters in Bengali literature. Her famous trilogy- Pratham Pratisruti, Subarnalata, and Bakulkatha- has spoken of strong female characters who have thrived through the then-oppressive patriarchal society.
Subarnalata, the daughter of Satyabati ( the protagonist of Pratham Pratisruti), is married off at a tender age to a family laden with patriarchal oppression. Through her rebellious and resilient nature, Subarnalata stands tall and sets an example of strength and women's empowerment for the upcoming generation with a liberal attitude and proper education.
3. Dipabali from Satkahan: Dipabali is a village girl, different from the other girls of her age. Satkahan is a 2-part story of this brave girl, who later becomes a District Magistrate, rising from humble beginnings, only through utmost confidence and her power to stand against dishonesty. From a child bride to a respected woman of substance- Dipabali's journey is nothing short of a lesson for every woman.
Samaresh Majumdar's storytelling resonates with most readers of modern Bengali literature. His perfect portrayal of the political and socio-economic backdrops comes to life as characters themselves. Dipabali is one of the most powerful characters in Bengali literature.
There are many powerful female characters in Bengali literature, like Binodini from Tagore's Chokher Bali, Kamal from Saratchandra's Sesh Prashna, and Sujata from Mahasweta Devi's Hajar Churashir Maa.
Let me know which of these is your favourite female character.
