Book Review: Failure To Make Round Rotis
"Failure to Make Round Rotis"- a cover that naturally draws attention, and so I picked up the book to read. Generally, I don't read many poetry books, but the experience of this one was completely different. It had a uniform and universal message- a message of rebellion, a message of womanhood and resilience. Mehak Goyal, the author, has conveyed this message very skilfully with a few simple yet meaningful lines.

Review of Failure to Make Round Rotis
A compilation of poetry that encompasses strong feminism, rebellion, equality, and resilience- Failure to Make Round Rotis is everything. It is a carefully curated book with 8 interesting subdivisions titled Medal of Participation, Adulting, The Bottle of Promises, Lottery of Love, Wallet of Happiness, How to do Laundry, The Indian Matchmaker, and A Woman's Lexicon.
Each poem describes an average woman's life from the beginning at each phase. Her initial days, schooling, parents' love, their expectations, friends who betray, estranged love, arranged marriage, dowry, match-making, in-laws' expectations, the ultimate realisation and final resilience. Few words, strong, powerful, impactful- each highlighting the idea of rebellion with great effect. The illustrations are as interesting as the poems. Here is an incredible example:
I really enjoyed reading the book as it very strongly questions the expectations that have been bestowed upon a woman in the name of "Normal"
Failure to Make Round Rotis is a must-read for those who enjoy literature in this genre.
