Me, Myself & Music: 7 RD Burman Classics in My Playlist
I am not a singer, but I sing decently. Most of us Bengalis have that skill, as it is, a generational trait. More than singing, I love listening to songs, and in fact, I love listening to any form of music. And yes, just as per the theme of Blogchatter Blog Hop this week, being a moody Gemini, I need constant recharge to keep on going with mundane tasks. What can be better than good music?
I don't confine myself to a particular genre of music. But mostly I get drawn to music from the 90s to 2010. After that, I can count and say the very few songs that have attracted me. Now, I have grown up listening to varied forms of music- Rabindra sangeet, old Bengali light music, Mohammed Rafi, Jagjit Sing, Boney M, Beatles, Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan, Runa Laila, Old Hindi movie songs and even classical music of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Parveen Sultana. Most of my family members have been inclined to music, and I have learned the same from them. Therefore, music plays an important role in my daily routine.
R D Burman, a composer who had ruled the charts for over 3 decades in Bollywood, is one of my favourite composers. The vibrant beats he used in his compositions, along with the diverse instruments that added to the novelty of his tunes, are still unparalleled. The son of the legendary musician SD Burman, he carried on the family legacy with his valuable contributions to the field of music. Today, I am enlisting a few of my favourite songs, composed by this immensely talented individual. These may differ from his most popular songs.
1. Tere Bina Jiya Jaye Na: This song from the 1978 film, Ghar, was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar, with a stunning Rekha and the charming Vinod Mehra in the lead role. This movie was known for its sensitive subject matter and melodious songs.
2. Sili Hawa Chhoo Gai: I heard this song much later in my life, on FM. I found out that this serene melody was part of an unreleased film starring Shabana Azmi and Nasiruddin Shah. Whatever it may be, the song gives me goosebumps and literally carries me to a riverbank where the water sparkles under the moonlit sky. Cool breeze is blowing, playing with my hair.
3. Tere Liye Palkon Ki: I don't know about the movie, it's called Harjayi, but it had Tina Munim and Randhir Kapoor. Lata Mangeshkar gives her magical voice to the beautiful tune.
4. Thodi Si Zamin: This song from the movie Sitara, sung by Bhupinder Singh and Lata Mangeshkar, has a simplistic tune with beautiful lyrics of Gulzar. Filmed on Mithun Chakraborty and Zareena Wahab, the song is beautifully picturized.
5. Ghar Jayegi Tar Jayegi: I love this song and the movie. Gulzar's lyrics and Asha Bhosle's magical voice elevate this song to new heights.
6. Katra Katra: Again, a superb movie with great music and some outstanding performances. Asha Bhosle's melodious voice brings life to the soul-touching music and outstanding lyrics of Gulzar.
7. Phir Se AAiyo: One has to watch the film to understand the depth of this sombre song. The pain and hope it carries through its slow tune are beautifully sung by Asha Bhosle.
RD Burman's rich, melodious journey and his contributions to music are, in themselves, a thesis-worthy topic. One blog post with 7 of his compositions cannot justify the value he has provided to the music world. However, this was a tribute to the maestro from me. and my humble blog.
