5 Action Movies with Strong Mothers

We are mostly used to watching films that show action-packed sequences with men in the lead fighting the bad. However, many movies also feature strong female characters fighting the bad for their own defence, either to protect themselves or their family. We can always find strong female characters in films like Tomb Raider, but these portrayals of women who take up the gun/sword as their work.

The ones we would be discussing today are mothers who are being wronged or threatened and who come out stronger by defending themselves and their families.

1. Double Jeopardy (1999): Ashley Judd stars as Libby, a married woman who gets falsely accused of her husband Nick's murder, while on a sailing getaway. Libby, who realises that her husband has framed the whole situation for insurance money, gets paroled in a parole house with her safety officer, Lehman, while her son is adopted by her friend Angela.

What follows is an action-packed journey of revenge and betrayal. The movie is full of twists, and the main character uses the Double Jeopardy rule to seek justice and get her son back.

Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones both deliver powerful screen presence, and the incredible story keeps us hooked.

2. The River Wild ( 1994): Gail is a former river guide who takes her son on a rafting trip, and is later joined by her husband, Tom. The family befriends a group of rafters led by Wade. Although the initial exchanges are friendly, Wade gradually shows his dangerous side, and the family realises they are under threat.

A series of chase and action sequences on the raft keeps viewers engaged throughout this wild, adventurous thriller.

Meryl Streep as Gail and Kevin Bacon as Wade give us one of the most intense moments between a lead character and the villain. A must-watch.

3. Panic Room (2002): A woman will go to great lengths to protect her daughter and her house from a pack of intruders who want to rob her house. Jodie Foster, Forest Whitaker and Jared Leto literally pull us into a game of cat-and-mouse in this spectacular thriller film.

This film by David Fincher is one of the best home-invasion films I have seen. The performances are incredible, and not a moment is wasted thanks to the screenplay.

4. Kidnap (2017): A small boy is kidnapped, and her mother gets on a mission to rescue him at any cost. Halle Berry stars as Karla, a waitress and single mother who is already exhausted from fighting for her son's custody.

The film is an action-packed car-chase drama in which a mother is ready to take on any challenge to get her son safely out of the kidnappers' hands.

5. Bird Box ( 2018): Bird Box is a post-apocalyptic thriller with Sandra Bullock playing the lead character, Malorie, a pregnant woman who has to protect her 2 children and the unborn from unknown forces that turn people suicidal.

She walks blindfolded, throughout the woods, amidst grave danger, all protecting herself and her kids from the lurking danger all around. This film has similarities to A Quiet Place and A River Wild.
