The Date #Writeapageaday #blogaberrycc
Romi's House 9
am
Romi
was trying to solve the crossword puzzle in the morning newspaper, just when
the doorbell rang. Slightly annoyed, she found Rony standing there, sweating
profusely and panting, but did he care? He still had that bright smile stuck on
his face. She knew he had just come from the gym, and Urvashi was with him, all
this while.
"Romu, guess what!" His innocent eyes sparkled with excitement. "She asked me out on a date!"
A
bit perplexed, Romi exploded, "Urvashi? As on a date? You've got to be kidding
me! Ronu, brake please!"
"I
knew you would never believe, but that's what happened." He declared, lifting
her petite body from the shoulders, and made her sit on a chair.
"Fine,
explain now." She pretended to be patient.
"So,
she asked me out at the Rooftop Café this evening. She would be ready by 6, and
I would have to pick her up. Finally, it's a date, Romu, it's a date" He gleamed with pride and anticipation, perhaps for some positive response from his best friend.
"Are
you sure it's you and Urvashi? Last time I heard, she was head over heels for
some random contact on Social Media. How did you come into the picture?" she
was genuinely curious.
"Dedication,
Romu, dedication! She could sense that. See, I joined the gym to give her
company, as she used to get bored. I changed my style to whatever she preferred
and then helped her with all her projects. Do you think she is blind?"
Romi
closed her eyes and murmured to herself, "You are blind, Ronu! Yes, you are
dedicated, loyal, and willing to bring out the best in yourself, but all for
the wrong person. You hardly look at the one who actually cares for you and for
whom you really matter." Her thoughts were interrupted by Rony's chuckle, "You
know, actually, there is indeed this guy she had befriended on social media, he
is also coming for some time at the café, and she is just going to introduce me
to him as her boyfriend so that he gets the shock of his life."
Just
as she had guessed, Urvashi was again fooling this honest boy. But would he
ever realise that? She knew exactly what
she had to do this time.
Rooftop Café 6:30 pm
Rony
was sitting alone at the table, his head bent forward, his hands clutching the tablecloth,
trying to get a grasp of whatever had happened just now. Romi approached him
and gently put her hand on his shoulder. "Ronu, I am here now."
Shocked initially,
Rony looked up at her. "Hey Romu, we had a wonderful time!" he tried
desperately to hide his disappointment under a bright smile, but failed
miserably.
Romi
pulled the chair closer to him, held his hand, "Ronu, I saw whatever had
happened, she just made you her bouncer, and once she could sense that the
other guy was safe, she left you to pay the bills and went away with him. Right?"
Rony
shook his head, "You had warned me so many times, but my own confidence so
blinded me that I just chose to unsee. I am a fool, Romu."
"Who said you are a fool? You are the most honest person I have ever seen. Only
you gave your heart to the wrong one. Perhaps you can choose someone else now,
maybe somebody who cares for you and who genuinely bothers about you?" She
clinched his fist softly.
A
surprised Rony lifted his eyes, "What do you mean, Romu?"
"Rony, can I be your date today, and perhaps for many more days ahead?"

This story struck a lovely balance between whimsy and relatability. The way hopes, awkwardness, and small moments collide on a date felt so real. I could almost feel the nerves and laughter through the words. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteA bitterweet story, Reubenna. Sometimes it takes a jhatka to see what is right for you. Rather, who is right for you. Mayuri/Sirimiri
ReplyDeleteThat was so beautiful. She brought out the best without pushing. Gentle, loving date.
ReplyDeleteGiving one's heart for the right makes all the difference sweet yet meaningful story.
ReplyDeleteSometimes we can be so blind to what's right in front of us, hai na? Hope Rony realizes Romi is the one for him
ReplyDeleteA sweet story - reminded me of Archie and Betty!
ReplyDeleteWe clearly miss a lot of things / people that are right in front of our eyes and go looking for those elsewhere. Such a beautiful reminder!
ReplyDeleteAh, another classic case of 'we never value what's right in front of us'. Hope Rony sees sense and realises how much Romi cares for him.
ReplyDeleteRony< Romi, the names were confusing a bit.I thought they were siblings. But alls well that ends well. I admire the way uou write short fiction. I just cant do it.
ReplyDeleteReal love often stands in the background, steady and patient, waiting for you to finally see what was always there. And that’s what made this ending so special. It wasn’t dramatic, it was earned. Beautifully written.
