6 Depressing Movies You Should Not Watch #WriteAPageADay

I used to enjoy watching thriller and horror films the most; however, at this point, what I choose to watch entirely depends on my mood. Time and again, I have ended up watching some really depressing films. Now, don't get me wrong on this: neither did I specifically want to watch these movies because they were sad, nor were any of these films inferior in any sense. It's just that they ended on a very sad note, despite their brilliance. So, without any further delay, let me form this bucket of depression:

1. Mother (2017): This movie is truly a piece of artistic cinema for me. But many would agree with me that it concludes on a very depressing note. It definitely is a metaphorical representation of Mother Nature and its destruction, where God also fails to protect her. But the scene of the mass destruction in the name of celebration really hits hard and compels one to think. Javier Bardem, Jennifer Lawrence, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer deliver powerful performances.

2. Swallow (2019): An abused and suppressed housewife takes to addiction, a strange one indeed, where she starts swallowing objects of all sorts to numb her grief. I will be honest: this is an uncomfortable film to watch. Haley Benett as the female lead is outstanding.

3. Blue Valentine (2010): Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams star in this drama. The movie dissects the couple's troubled relationship in brutal detail. The way the relationship worsens day by day is quite painful to observe. Michelle Williams is such a powerful actor; even her moments of silence and blankness convey so much that words cannot.

4. Baby Blues (2008): Much before Goodnight Mommy, this indie film was released. A mother, suffering heavily from post-partum depression, turns to a threat to her children. The eldest son takes responsibility for saving his siblings. Though not as well-made or hard-hitting as the other films, the concept by itself is quite scary. This is a film I would not recommend watching. I would never watch it again.

5. Lovely Molly (2011): A demonic possession turns a lovely young, newly married woman into a terrifying, monstrous killer. What makes it different from other films about possession is the slow, tormenting transformation of the jovial woman. Some really insane scenes will make one turn their head or close their eyes. They are not gory, but they are too disturbing. More than the physical transformation, Molly's mental decline is terrifying to watch. I was shocked to find the film had low ratings online.

6. Midsommar (2019): This movie is disturbing to the core, leaving you repulsive at many points and yet you get fixated on the continuous and unexpected shocking happenings throughout its runtime. Florence Pugh is a vision in her own right. This film is a must-watch for psychological horror lovers, provided you have the stomach for the atrocities it depicts. You sometimes fail to differentiate between visions, dreams, nightmares and real happenings. It is unpredictable and actually stirs a sane man's brain.
