6 More Hindi Movies Adapted from Bengali Movies
Last year, around July, I came up with a list of a few Hindi Films that were originally made in Bengali. Since last week, when I wrote about Basu Chatterjee and some of his works, I have been considering expanding the list of these Hindi remakes. (His film Manzil was a remake of Mrinal Sen's Akash Kusum.) So, without further ado, let's deep dive:
1. Bees Saal Baad from Jighansha: The very popular thriller film, Bees Saal Baad, that was released in 1962, was the Hindi adaptation of the 1951 Bengali movie, Jighansha. The film had Biswajit and Waheeda Rehman in the lead roles and was directed by Biren Nag, with melodious music by Hemanta Mukhopadhyay. The Bengali version Jighansha was directed by Ajoy Kar and was a screen adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles.
This was an exact replica of the original, except that the romantic angle was highlighted more in the Hindi version.
2. Khamoshi from Dweep Jwele Jai: Dweep Jwele Jai was one of the best Bengali movies that spoke about mental health with sensitivity. It was also pathbreaking for Suchitra Sen's performance. Released in 1959, this movie was directed by Asit Sen. The 1970 Hindi remake, also directed by Asit Sen, starred Waheeda Rehman in the lead role. Both films had enchanting music that is still enjoyed by everyone.
3. Amar Prem from Nishipadma: The 1970 Bengali film Nishipadma was a screen adaptation of noted author Bibhutibhshan Bandopadhyay's book. It was directed by Arabindo Mukhopadhyay and had Uttam Kumar and Sabitri Chattopadhyay in lead roles. The Hindi adaptation, directed by Sakti Samnata, was released in 1972, starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore.
4. Balika Badhu from Balika Bodhu: The 1967 Bengali film, Balika Bodhu, directed by Tarun Majumdar, was a screen adaptation of Bimal Kar's story of the same name. Its Hindi adaptation was released in 1976 and was directed by Majumdar again. The music of both films was very popular. The Bengali film had Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Mousumi Chatterji in the lead roles, while the Hindi version had Sachin and Rajni Sharma.
5. Safed Jhooth from Chutir Phande: Chutir Phande, a very hilarious film released in 1975, was directed by Salil Sen and had Soumitra Chattopadhyay, Aparna Sen and Utpal Dutt in lead roles. The Hindi adaptation, Safed Jhooth, directed by Basu Chatterjee, was released in 1977 and had Vinod Mehra, Mithoo Mukherjee and Ashok Kumar in the lead.
6. Kora Kagaz from Saat Pake Bandha: Written by Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay, Saat Pake Bandha was brought to the Bengali screen by Ajoy Kar in 1963. It starred Suchitra Sen and Soumitra Chattopadhyay. The Hindi adaptation Kora Kagaz, directed by Anil Ganguly, was released in 1974 and starred Jaya Bhaduri and Vijay Anand.
