Top 5 Foot-Tapping Songs to Play this Ganesh Chaturthi
The whole of Mumbai has started celebrating. This Sunday, the sounds of dhol and tasha, topped with people's devotion, defeated the outpourings to welcome Bappa in various parts of the city. Every house, shop and corner has been lit bright with flowers, lights, modaks, laddoos and the citizens' enthusiasm. Tomorrow marks the holy occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. To celebrate this day, amidst chants and rituals, there will be dance and merrymaking amongst devotees. I have created a playlist of a few foot-tapping dance numbers suitable for this Ganesh Chaturthi.
1. Deva ho Deva ( Hum Se Badhkar Kaun): I remember watching this song in Chitrahar as a kid, and humming along throughout. What was striking for me was the assembly of the famous villains of Hindi films in the picturization. There was Amjad Khan, Danny Dengzongpa, and Ranjeet, along with Mithun ( who seemed to be the good guy). Jokes apart, the vocals were powerful with Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and Bhupinder Singh giving their devotional best.
2. Ganpati Apne Gaon Chale (Agneepath): A path-defining film, with memorable performances, heart-piercing dialogues and this song- Agneepath was one of a kind. The song has an essence of pure celebration and the hearty cheers of the devotees. Mithun, Neelam and Amitabh Bachchan bring out the true spirit of the celebrities through their performance, even in the song. Sudesh Bhonsle and Kavitha Krishnamoorthy gave their voices in this very energetic song. The picturization in the midst of a slum, the enthusiastic dance steps amidst flying white pigeons and a colourful, bursting crowd absolutely justifies the magnanimity of the movie.
3. Maurya Re (Don): Was there a Ganpati song in the original Don? I am not sure, but I enjoy this song from the Farhan Akhtar-directed version featuring Shahrukh Khan. Not that widely popular like other Ganpati songs, perhaps due to not being that high-octane like its other counterparts, however, sung by Shankar Mahadevan, this can still be considered foot-tapping. The reason is also an electrifying Shah Rukh Khan.
4. Mera Hi Jalwa ( Wanted): Do I remember the film, I mean, what the story is, who else was there with Salman Khan? No. But what I remember the most is this song. Absolutely stunning! And I think only Salman Khan can make such weird steps look cool on screen. Only he can flaunt his own Jalwa, in front of Bappa, because I used to think the lyrics start with Tera hi Jalwa, a devotee's dedication to his God, but not much later I noticed it's actually Mera hi Jalwa, no wonder it's Bhaijaan. The guest appearances of actors like Anil Kapoor and Govinda add to the spark.
5. Deva Shree Ganesha (Agneepath): The last on my list, but the best of it all, this song does not have any dance sequence as such, due to the intensity of the story, but the music is surely great for power-packed dance performances. I wish the makers had made another version of the song with Hrithik grooving in with it, but who am I to complain? The song is still iconic along with the film.
