Top 5 Hindi Films Based on Rabindranath Tagore's Stories

Today is Rabindra Jayanti, a day celebrated throughout Bengal with various cultural programs. In tribute to Viswa Kavi, as he is affectionately called, I would like to highlight a few Hindi films that are based on his stories.

1. Milan ( 1946 ): This film should not be confused with the well-known movie featuring Sunil Dutt and Nutan, as it is entirely different. Released before India gained independence, this film is based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel, "Noukadubi." It stars Dilip Kumar in the lead role of Ramesh and Pahari Sanyal as Akshay. It was fascinating to see Sanyal, a renowned actor in Bengali cinema, take on a character with negative traits, as he was typically known for portraying virtuous roles. The good news is that this film is available on YouTube.

2. Kabuliwala ( 1961): "Kabuliwala, tumhare jholi mein kya hai?" Every time the little Mini asks this simple question of the vendor from Afghanistan, he is reminded of his own daughter, whom he has left behind in Kabul. This interaction marks the beginning of their beautiful bond. In this film, based on Tagore's short story of the same name, Balraj Sahani delivers an incredible performance as Abdul Rehman Khan. The Kabuliwala's honesty, straightforwardness, simplicity, and his aversion to dishonesty and lies are portrayed perfectly by the actor. This film and his performance remain a landmark in Hindi cinema.

3. Uphaar ( 1971): The film, based on Tagore's short story "Samapti," stars Swarup Dutta and Jaya Bhaduri in leading roles. Minoo, a spirited village girl, marries Anoop, a law student. She becomes restless in her in-laws' house, but manages to endure due to Anoop's love and care. Nevertheless, things take a turn when Anoop must return to Calcutta to resume his studies. Jaya Bhaduri delivers a charming performance as Minoo, a free-spirited teenager who finds herself reluctantly bound by the customs of married life, especially under the strict supervision of her mother-in-law. Her only source of hope is her husband, Anoop.

4. Geet Gaata Chal ( 1975): Shyam is an orphaned and free-spirited boy who becomes friends with Radha, the daughter of a wealthy family. While Radha falls in love with Shyam, he views her as a good companion and is hesitant to engage in any romantic relationship. The plot thickens when Radha's father decides to arrange their marriage. This film, based on Tagore's story "Atithi," features Sachin as Shyam, who delivers a captivating performance, and Sarika as Radha, who looks beautiful. The songs by Ravindra Jain also contribute to the film’s popularity.

5. Lekin ( 1991): Tagore's short story "Khudito Pashan" inspired this film directed by Gulzar. The story follows Sameer Niyogi, a museum curator tasked with taking possession of an abandoned mansion in Rajasthan. While exploring the mansion, he begins to have visions of the palace during a different time, featuring a mysterious and hauntingly beautiful woman named Reva.

The film stars Vinod Khanna as Sameer and Dimple Kapadia as Reva. The songs by Hridaynath Mangeshkar are also beautifully haunting and continue to be loved by audiences.
