"F" atafati Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z
The sixth day of my #BlogchatterA2Z journey presented a significant challenge, as there are very few Bengali films that begin with the letter "F." This is largely because, in Bengali, the "F" sound isn't commonly used; words that start with the letter ফ are pronounced as "Ph" instead. The only exception is the slang term "Fatafati."
I was only able to find two contemporary Bengali films that start with "F": one is "Fatafati," and the other is "F.I.R." After focusing on serious and thought-provoking films for the past five days, I decided to take a lighter approach today, making "F" atafati the perfect choice. This film, directed by Aritra Mukherjee, is a comedy that conveys an important message.
Synopsis
Phullara is a seamstress living in the small town of Dhulisahar. She enjoys a happy life with her loving husband, Bachaspati, her caring mother-in-law, Behula, and her much younger brother-in-law, Gogol. Everything seems perfect in their family, except for Phullara's plus-size figure, which subjects her to constant humiliation from their neighbours. One of the main culprits is Vicky, a popular social media influencer known for her "media-approved" perfect shape.
When a sudden financial emergency arises, Bachaspati can no longer support the household on his own. To help, Phullara decided to start a social media channel focused on body positivity and featuring some of her self-styled outfits, all while keeping her face covered. Gogol steps up to assist her by translating Phullara's Bengali messages into English and taking pictures for her channel, which she names "Fatafati."
To their surprise, the channel quickly becomes a sensation, attracting attention and offers for endorsements from various brands. Eventually, Phullara is invited to walk the ramp at a prominent fashion show, where she chooses to reveal her true identity by uncovering her face.
Review and Significance
"F" atafati is a light-hearted comedy that carries an important message about body positivity. In today's world of Instagram perfection, it becomes challenging for individuals like Phullara to establish their own identities. The film also addresses significant issues, such as the negative effects of crash diets and the constant pressure on women to appear perfect. However, the film's runtime could have been shorter, as some scenes felt forced at times.
The best aspect of "Fatafati" is that it avoids melodrama, conveying the most serious messages in a light-hearted manner. Ritabharai shines as Phullara, showcasing her natural comic timing, especially in scenes where she struggles to fit into her old clothes. Abir is well cast as Bachaspati, while Soma Chakraborty and Raktim Samanta deliver strong performances as Behula and Gogol, respectively.
Overall, "Fatafati" is an entertaining film, making it a perfect choice for family movie time.
