"E" i Raat Tomar Amar Bengali Movie Review #BlogchatterA2Z
What is more important: "Love" or "Companionship"? On the fifth day of my #BlogchatterA2Z journey, I plan to explore this significant question by reviewing the recently released film, "E" i Raat Tomar Amar, directed by Parambrata Chatterjee.
Synopsis
Amar and Jayita are an elderly couple, with Jayita currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Amar has taken on the role of her caregiver. Amar's relationship with their son, Joy, is strained; he often urges them to relocate to the UK with him. However, Amar, being stubborn, refuses to leave India. Instead, he chooses to move to North Bengal, to their ancestral home, taking Jayita with him.
On the night of their 50th wedding anniversary, Amar is astonished to see a frail Jayita dressed glamorously in a beautiful saree, eager to spend the evening together over dinner and drinks. Despite his concerns about her health, Amar gives in to her insistence. They reminisce about their past, sharing both cherished memories and hidden grievances, including discussions about their infidelities.
As the night unfolds, Jayita's health worsens, and she takes her last breath in Amar's arms. The following morning, after 15 years of not speaking, Amar reaches out to Joy, breaking the silence between them.
Review and Significance
Ei Raat Tomar Amar means "This Night Belongs to You and I". Most of the movie revolves around the one night of Amar and Jayita's anniversary. It explores the significant theme of companionship. Both Amar and Jayita had been involved with other people throughout their lives, yet they had never left each other's side. Despite Amar being harsh with their son, Joy, regarding his career choices, Jayita, who was deeply hurt by the injustice done to her only son, still chose to stand by her husband. Amar had the option to stay in Kolkata to provide better medical care for his wife, but he decided to move to his ancestral home to spend quality time with her during her final days. This choice was likely driven by guilt for two reasons: his infidelity in the past, which he had confessed to Jayita, and his harshness toward their son.
However, during their last dance, Jayita shattered Amar's heart by revealing that she, too, had cheated on him. Unlike Amar, she did not have the courage to confess this to her husband. Her emotional collapse right after admitting her infidelity suggests that she had been living for that moment, wanting to completely surrender to Amar, her companion through good and bad times. Her death ultimately served as a catalyst for a conversation between the estranged father and son, creating a significant bridge between them that Jayita had been unable to build while she was alive.
The performances of Anjan Dutt and Aparna Sen are heartwarming. Aparna Sen has retained her charm and that electrifying smile that melts hearts. Both actors excel in their portrayals. Sen, as the sensitive and understanding Jayita, shines in key scenes where she navigates her stubborn husband's volatile moods. Meanwhile, Dutt effectively conveys Amar's haplessness throughout, especially in the moment when Jayita reveals her infidelity. His expression reflects a husband who has struggled with his own past mistakes and who had unwavering trust in his wife—only to be shattered in an instant.
Ei Raat Tomar Amar is a beautifully crafted film that prompts us to reflect on the importance of companionship and understanding in our lives—perhaps even more than the love we have for our children, as one day they will also choose their own paths and go their separate ways.
