Top 8 Contemporary Bengali Movies with Great Music

Contemporary Bengali film music is dominated by a few names like Anupam Roy, Anjan Dutt, Jeet Ganguly and Indradip Dasgupta. Some of the films are popular just because of the awesome music. Here are my picks of films with great music.

1. Autograph: This 2010 film was a milestone when it comes to music. It was a good film, and the soulful music definitely added to its popularity. Bengali Music industry saw a new talent who revolutionized the whole music scene of the industry. I am talking about composer Anupam Roy. The song, "Amake amar moto thakte dao" almost became Bengal's anthem back then and it still continues to woo many hearts. Other compositions like Rupam Islam's "Beche thakar gaan" and Shreya Ghoshal's " Chol Rastay" made everyone swoon, and after a pretty long gap ( almost 30 years) Bengali film music saw the path of revival.

2. Premer Kahini: Bengali commercial film music had already started seeing hope, with Jeet Ganguly coming to the rescue. This 2008 film had some immensely popular tunes that still give a pleasant feel to the listener's mind. Irrespective of how the film was, the music ruled the charts for a long time. Whenever it rains, Shaan's "Rimjhim e Dharate" still comes to mind. Other notable songs were Babul Supriyo's " Aj Swapno Sukher Choyate" and Shreya Ghoshal's version of "Premer Kahini". I don't remember watching the film, but the music still tops my playlist.

3. Charulata 2011: A modern take on Rabindranath Tagore's Nastanirh this film sees Charulata as today's woman. I am not a fan of the film, but the melodious songs composed by Indradip Dasgupta still remain dear to me. Rupankar Bagchi's " Amay Ektu Aral", Subhamita's, " Abchaya Alo" and Rashid Khan's " Dukho Dite Paro" were the best compositions from the album.

4. Ranjana Ami Ar Asbo Na: A great filmmaker, a competent actor and most of all a wonderful musician, Anjan Dutt needs no introduction when it comes to the Bengali entertainment industry. This 2011 film was amazing, and so was the music. " Tumi Asbe bole tai" by Somlata Acharya and the old favourite " Ranjana Ami Ar Asbo Na" are the top favourites from the film. Also, it is better enjoyed when the film is watched, and trust me, it's a very good movie.

5. Cholo Let's Go: Another nice film by Anjan Dutt, the music of this film was composed by his son, Neel Dutt and was loved by all when it was released in 2008. " Chupi Chupi Raat" by Rupankar Bagchi ", Cholo Let's Go" by Anjan Dutt, and Nachiketa's " Amazing Grace" were the chartbusters of the time. It is important to watch the film whenever you try to enjoy the music of Anjan Dutt's film. The music is so impactful here.

6. Baishe Srabon: A perfect thriller with some power-packed performances and heart-touching music - the Bengali film audience got everything that they were thirsty for in this 2011 movie. Every song is meaningful, exactly placed in the moments where it was needed by the composer Anupam Roy. Shreya Ghoshal's "Gobhire Jao", Rupam Islam's " Ei Srabon", and Anupam Roy's " Ekbar Bol" were played everywhere; such was the craze of the music back then. Even the opening song, " Mati Khure" by Raghab Chatterji, which is not much talked about, is absolutely breathtaking.

7. Chirodini Tumi Je Amar: This film was loosely based on a true event of the tragic love of Priyanka Todi and Rejwanur Rizwanur Rehman, and I have not watched it. But I am a big fan of the music composed by Jeet Ganguly. " U Lalla"," Batase Gungun" and "Jhiri Jhiri" by June Banerjee and " Piya Re" by Zubin Garg were the topmost songs of that time.

8. Jatiswar: This film received the National Award for Music and there are some memorable songs composed by Kabir Suman. " E Tumi Kemon Tumi" by Rupankar Bagchi is such a bold composition that it almost represents the whole story of the film, which is about a person who can recall his previous life memories. Other songs like Srikanta Acharya's " Khrishte ar Krishte" and Rupankar's "Sohosa Ele Ki" were equally likeable from this 2014 film.
