5 Empowering Movies to Watch this Women's Day

Most of us love watching movies. Some movies make a long-lasting impact on us. Everyone has some movie in mind that has given a nice message or has taught us something. One such genre of movies is women-oriented films. Women-oriented films can be of various types. Some are funny, some are action-based, some are true stories and some are fiction. However, the essence of these movies lies in the fact that they are about strong women who stand up for themselves in adverse situations. Today, I have made a list of 5 women-oriented movies that can be watched this Women's Day.

5 Empowering Movies to Watch this Women's Day

1. Not Without My Daughter: This 1991 movie, starring Sally Field and Alfred Molina in the lead roles, is based on true events about an American woman and her struggles to escape Iran with her daughter. The movie had received mixed views on being religious and race-biased, too. However, keeping all that aside, I have chosen this movie in the list since it is about a strong woman who single-handedly fights aggressive patriarchy for her daughter's safety and future. Sally Field was at her best, and boy, who could portray a strong mother character better than her!

2. Parched: This 2015 movie is about 3 friends from different backgrounds who find themselves in adverse situations and finally escape them with a lot of courage and hope. The movie stars Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla and Tanishtha Chatterjee in the lead roles. While Indian moviegoers celebrated films like Veere Di Wedding and tagged them as liberating, most of the media remained silent on this one, which I thought truly was a liberating venture. I wonder why!!

3. Hidden Figures: 3 Black female mathematicians, 1960s America - I am sure you get the picture here. Yes, Hidden Figures is a biographical film that tells the immense struggle amongst differences, brutal racism and the final success of 3 black women Mathematicians. Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae are the stars of this wonderful movie. A must-watch for all!

4. Wild: Reese Witherspoon fans, you gotta watch this gem! The lady stars in this adventure film with all her soul and heart. It is a biographical film about an inexperienced woman who takes on a hiking journey of 1800 km all alone to heal and re-discover herself. The 94 days of travel, with adversities of nature, is sewn into a superb adventure tale.

5. The Help: Probably the most popular amongst the list, this film went on to win several awards, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress role by Octavia Spencer. The Help is a film about an African-American maid who works for a socialite. The powerful performances by an ensemble cast and the heart-warming story take you back to the 1960s Racism-driven America. Viola Davis, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer star in this beautiful film.

While writing for this article, I came across popular names for Women-Empowering movies, like Wonder Woman, Erin Brockovich, Kill Bill and Thappad, but I thought of choosing some unconventional movies that I had watched and found very inspiring to be shared amongst all. Do you have such movie recommendations, too? I would love to watch those; there is no bar for language, provided they come with subtitles.
