5 Disturbing Hindi Movies Not for the Faint-Hearted

When it comes to watching movies, what matters most to me is the subject matter and the presentation, irrespective of the genre. If asked, I will label myself as a Horror/Mystery/Thriller movie fan, but whenever I get a chance, I try to explore beyond this pre-labelled territory. In the quest to watch some exceptional movies, I have encountered certain Hindi films that I wished I had skipped. These films are so disturbing that they literally mess up the mind. Before I start the list, here is a trigger warning: please avoid these movies at any cost if dark themes are not your choice.

5 Disturbing Hindi Movies Not for the Faint-Hearted:

1. Ugly: This 2013 movie, directed by Anurag Kashyap deals with real dirt on people's minds. The missing of a little girl becomes the core issue and an opportunity for people to seek benefits out of that grave situation. It's painful to watch how the actual crisis gets sabotaged under the different agendas of different people and leads to a heartwrenching climax. The film stars Ronit Roy, Rahul Bhatt, Tejaswini Kolhapuri and Sidhant Kapoor in the lead roles. This movie is dark disturbing and haunts you for long.

2. Love Sonia: This 2018 film has Mrunal Thakur, Rajkumar Rao, Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chaddha, Freida Pinto and Anupam Kher. When Sonia's debt-ridden father sells her sister to the local landlord, she makes it to Mumbai to rescue her at any cost. What follows is a sickening journey of Sonia into the dark world of prostitution and sex trafficking. The film has some incredibly vile characters and gruesome scenes, sometimes very difficult to watch.

3. Raman Raghav 2.0: Based on the serial killings of notorious serial killer Raman Raghav, this 2016 film has Nawazuddin Siddique playing the titular role along with Vicky Kaushal as a corrupt cop. Another masterpiece from Anurag Kashyap, this film is gory and violent and makes one wonder who the real criminal is, the hunter or the hunted?

4. Posham Pa: Suman Mukhopadhyay directs this 2019 thriller based on true serial killings during the 90s. It's a story of a mother and 2 daughters who can go to any height to get what they want. The actual events that took place in Maharashtra were considered to be one of the most gruesome serial killings in India. The film stars Mahie Gill, Sayani Gupta, Ragini Khanna, Shivani Raghuvanshi and Imaad Shah.

5. Titli:  A young man gets trapped in his hideous "family business", and all the more he wants to get away, the more he gets entangled. It's a situation of "you can run but not hide". Finally, he and his reluctant wife, who was having an affair with a married middle-aged man, somehow manage to get out of these complex situations.  This 2014 film has debutant Shashank. Arora and Shivani Raghuvanshi in lead roles.

Some other films that are also quite disturbing and dark are NH 10, Bulbull and Gulaal.
