Let's Select a Few Good Movies to Watch

This month, I watched several films, ranging from recently released ones to classics from the 80s, covering different genres. Was I completely satisfied with all of them? No. So, what influenced my choices for these particular films? More broadly, what factors compel or trigger me to select a specific movie or book? Honestly, there are no strict rules; however, I’ll try to outline a few considerations that guide my selections for my next watchlist. Let’s make it happen! right here, right now:

1. Trailers: A major reason that I often select a particular genre of films is that the trailers have been quite engaging and have genuinely ignited an interest in me to include it in my playlist. In recent times, I have not felt that urge to pick any film based on its trailer, and I watched a few of those. However, one of the movies that I watched recently after watching the trailer was Kalidhar Lapataa, and I did not regret it; in fact, I watched it with my family.

2. The Story: Most individuals would choose a story to be the first selecting factor to watch a movie, but for me, it comes second, as there have been too many films with incredible stories but poor execution. I have found this mostly with Fairy Tales. But now, one of the few films that is coming to my mind, and that I would include in my watchlist, is the 2023 film, The Haunting in Venice. The reason it's Hercules Poirot, and also it's from the same makers as the previous two Poirot films, with Kenneth Branagh in the lead.

3. Cast and Crew: It may sound petty, but credibility works most of the time. So, if the movie is by a filmmaker who has gifted us with previous valuable projects, I would want to watch it. Or even, any actor who can seldom go wrong in their projects and performances, I will pick their next film in all probability. One director who comes to my mind is David Lynch. I had watched The Elephant Man and Eraserhead long ago. And then Mullohand Drive a few years back- I mean, one obviously becomes interested in a movie directed by somebody with such a glorious body of work behind. So, recently, when I found his 1986 film, Blue Velvet, I watched it, and now I am planning to watch one of his celebrated films, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. I am a huge fan of James McAvoy, so I have been watching quite a few of his films, selectively. Despite how the film is, one factor is common and that is his performance, at least I cannot take my eyes off when he is on screen, whether it's as a positive character or something in shades of grey.  Based on this, I would love to watch what he has done as a filmmaker, with his recent directorial debut, California Schemin'. I just found out about it, like right now.

4. Recommendations/Word of Mouth: When a film becomes the talk of the town, I may watch it, but again, it depends on the subject matter. Like in recent times, a film that got everyone's attention was Saiyara, despite debutant actors, zero publicity and heavyweight competition from bigger movies with bigger stars. I would definitely watch the film out of curiosity. A similar thing happened with Animal; whether people were talking positively or negatively about it, the fact was that everyone was talking about it. And I watched it, did not like it, because of the continuous rage and violence, but I can't deny that I enjoyed the performance of each and every actor. So, right now, since Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana is every magazine and article's point of discussion, I might watch it.

5. Sequels/Universes: This is like auto-tune. If I like a certain film, and it is followed by a sequel, I generally watch it. It happened with Drishyam, A Quiet Place, A Simple Favour, The Conjuring and many more. So right now, I am waiting to watch Conjuring: The Last Rights, and the 3rd part of Now You See Me- Now You See Me: Now You Dont. Similarly, I would also include the sequel to Shaitan in my watchlist.

Looking forward to The woman in cabin 10 adaptation.

  2. I watched and loved Kalidhar Laapata simply because I know Abhishek's choice of films. He always does films that can be watched with families and you can watch them guilt free.
