Enjoy this Diwali with 5 Spooky Bengali Films for Kids

Isn't this such an incredible year? With Diwali and Halloween falling on the same day, what can get more exciting for the kids!! So, I was wondering if I can prepare a Spooky Treat for the kids with a list of Kid's Horror films from Bengal. Without much drags and brags, let's get into it.

Top 5 Spooky Bengali Films for Kids to watch this Diwali

1. Jekhane Bhooter Bhoy ( 2012): An anthology of 3 incredible short horror stories by Satyajit Ray and Saradindu Bandopadhyay, this film is made as a narration of Tarini Khuro, a character from Ray's children's stories. Directed by Sandip Ray, the film has an ensemble cast of Paran Bandopadhyay, Abir Chatterji. Saswata Chatterji and many more. My favourite among the 3 stories is Bhoot O Bhabishyat, because of the hilarious conversations of the 2 leads, played to perfection by Paran Bandopdhay and Saswata Chatterji. This film is spookily entertaining for kids.

2. Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012): Considered as one of the best satires of our times, this film by Anik Dutta won loads of acclodes when it was released. A gang of ghosts who haunt a huge mansion are in trouble as they are on the verge of getting homeless soon. How they tackle the situation with unity and smartness is the whole story about. A truly enjoyable film, with amazing performances, great music and smart presentation, this is a must-watch for family.

3. Sob Bhooturey (2017): An editor of a magazine, along with his assistant travels to get a scoop to a village that is haunted by ghosts of kids. How he investigates the whole case and finally frees the village from a curse, is what the film is about. The film is quite scary, and some scenes involving ghosts of kids can be disturbing for small children. So, parental guidance is recommended while viewing. Overall, the movie by Birsa Dasgupta is quite spooky.

4. Patalghar ( 2003): Adapted from Shirshendu Mukherji's childrens' novel of the same name, this film became quite popular when it was released. It's about a strange instrument invented by an 18th century Bengali scientist that can make one sleep for a century. As common with the author's stories, there are many interesting characters in the film. The music is also hummable and the performances of all the actors make the movie a memorable experience.

5. Bhootpari (2024): A writer travels to her ancestral home with her son. While she becomes busy in her daily work, the boy wonders about the house and befriends a thief and a ghost of a beautiful woman. To his surprise the ghost wants his help for something that brings out some unthinkable hidden secrets from the past. The movie, although a bit slow has some wonderful visuals, specially some involving the ghost. Again we get to see some incredible performances by Jaya Ahsan and Riwik Chakraborty.

So this is my curated list of films to make this Halloweeny Diwali more spooky and fun for kids amidst lighting diyas and bursting crackers.

Wishing you all a Happy Diwali and Spooky Halloeween. Enjoy with your family.
