Top 5 Feel-Good Bengali Films with A Message

Keeping up with the festive mood, today I am going to write about several movies that have been able to positively affect the viewer's minds. These films are not only entertaining but also convey valuable messages with a subtle and soft approach. Here are a few Bengali films that I have found to fall under the category of Feel-Good movies.

1. Ramdhanu (2014): Much before English Medium this film raised the question of a common middle-class family's struggles to get their child admitted to a reputed English-medium school. The film is a light-hearted eye opener, that never fails to get monotonous due to its spontaneous screenplay and noteworthy performances by Shibprasad Mukherji and Gargi Roy Chowdhury as the couple. The scenes of the child's admission interview that ultimately becomes the interview of his parents, are hilarious. Rachana Banerji in the role of the kind-hearted teacher is very lovable.

2. Haami (2018): Shibaprasad Mukherji and Gargi Roy Chowdhury team up again in this film as parents stuck in between what is right and what is wrong as a part of upbringing their son. During this confusion comes another angle of a simple peck (haami) between two 6 year old students, that was blown out of proportion by one of the child's parents. A simple and hilarious film that again shows how we forget the simplicities of life and make things complicated due to our thought process. This is a beautiful film and a must-see for all the parents out there.

3. Gotro (2019): A huge mansion owned by an aging widow, is a target of a local goon cum political figure. The house has some very interesting inmates, and due to the regular threats of the goon, the lady appoints a bodyguard cum security guard for her house, but is unaware that he is an ex-prisoner, belonging to another religion. The film is entertaining and has some powerful performances by Anusua Majumdar and Manali De. This movie shows in spite of differences how with time, patience, loyalty and perseverence it is possible to win hearts.

4. Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti (2020): Shabari gets married to a reputed family, run under the strict guidance of her mother-in-law. Shabari is a Sanskrit professor but no one in her in-law's family are aware of her other profession, which is of a Ritual Performer (Purohit). Her mother-in-law who is also a Panchayat Pradhan and talks about women empowerment believes in gender stereotypes. Shabari's life becomes difficult once she gets caught red-handed by her husband and mother-in-law. The film is a lovely answer to gender-stereotyping of professions.

5. Kuler Achaar (2022): A newly wed woman's life becomes problematic when she refuses to change her surname. Her strict father-in-law is dead-against this decision but she gets strong support from her mother-in-law who also wants to change her surname to her own maiden one. This is a light-hearted movie with a very thought-provoking message of respecting a woman's choice after marriage. The performances of Madhumita, Indrani Halder and Neel Mukherji keep the tone of the film more entertaining.
