The Hateful 8 Villains in Hindi Films

Hindi films have seen various villainous characters throughout the ages. There are Gabbar, Mogambo, Shakaal and Dr. Dang, to name a few. Even before that, actors like Pran, Premnath, and Prem Chopra ruled as the antagonists on the silver screen. Before becoming leading heroes, actors like Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha had donned the villain's hats successfully in various movies. The female actors are not behind too. Who can forget Lalita Pawar's evil mother-in-law act in "Sau Din Saas Ke", Manorama's Chachiji in "Sita Aur Geeta" Rohini Hattangadi's Amba in "Chaalbaaz" and Bindu's Mrs Bhandari in "Biwi Ho To Aisi"! Today, I have picked my personal Hateful 8 villainous characters in this blog:

1. Dil Navaz (1947 Earth): A sweet-speaking, much-loving ice-candy vendor who will do anything when his hatred and jealousy spark due to his love interest choosing another lover; Aamir Khan as Dil Navaz was absolutely hateful in the movie and the actor has given such a believable performance in that complicated character, that one starts despising him after watching his moral downfall. One can feel his inner turmoil and envy for his rival, burning inside with every expression he delivers and word he speaks. And that is also without being loud and over-emoting. That's the beauty of the actor Aamir Khan, who truly is beyond any petty fancy awards. Personally, this is my most hated villain from Hindi films that I can recall.

2. Makdee (Makdee): This is perhaps one of the best children's films that I have watched. Shabana Azmi as Makdee was the celluloid representation of all the Chudails and witches from our childhood fairy tales and dadima's ghost stories. She was so scary as Makdee, the kidnapper who disguised as a witch to scare kids, to carry out her evil business, that you get goosebumps whenever she comes on screen in this rather cute film.

3. Viraj Singh Dagar (Love Hostel): Recently, when Bobby Deol's portrayal as the mute villain, Abrar, in "Animal " was praised so much, we went down memory lane, and there's this character of Viraj Singh Darar that the actor had already played before. He is a deadly villain, thirsty for the blood of innocent young couples who elope and get married. So much is his hatred that even his niece is not spared from his rage. This character is scary and brutal, and Bobby Deol looks so terrifying that you sometimes wonder whether he was the same curly-haired and soft-eyed lover-boy of the 90s.

4. Amod Parekh (Samay): Not everyone talks about this character, but to me, it's one of the most hateful villains Hindi films have ever given us. A serial killer kills people with the same eye power and is hunted by a cop who has to save her daughter from his cruel grasps. Jacky Shroff is good in his brief presence as the killer, but more than the performance, the intention and the baseless motive make him so hateful. I am not sure why no one talks much about the film, but I find it quite compelling and sincere in its effort.

5. Karan (Ek Haseena Thi): Imagine a situation where you have fully believed in a complete stranger and start sharing your life with him, and all of a sudden he absolutely vanishes, leaving you stuck under piles of mud from where there is no way to escape. Saif Ali Khan as Karan is charming and a smooth talker in the beginning of the film who can win any woman's heart, but later on turns out to be a hard-core criminal who just uses an innocent and unsuspecting girl only to get her trapped in the dirt of the criminal world.  One must stop and think about the safety of single women in big cities. The character is so vile that the viewers don't feel any sympathy at his brutal end.

6. Raghavan (Raman Raghav 2.0): Why I picked Raghav and why not Raman as the despiseful character in this film, is because, at least we know Raman is a killer from the beginning but we don't know that the investigating officer himself is a psychotic individual with as much killer instincts as the criminal he is chasing after. Vicky Kaushal is beyond brilliant in his portrayal of Raghavan. Every time he comes on screen, as a viewer I felt like running away and not witnessing to what he is up to, because the sudden shocks were too brutal.

7. Bob Biswas (Kahani) & Mohit Dewan (Kahani 2): Seldom have I seen a character leaving such a horrific impact with just a few minutes of screen presence. One of the most iconic villainous characters ever written, Bob Biswas, was so impactful that the character called for another separate film. And Saswata Chatterji's performance is immemorable. Again another underrated villain character but Kahani 2's Mohit Dewan, portrayed by Jugal Hansraj is a vile and immoral character beyond words. A paedophile who does not even leave his own niece and who can stoop to any low to catch her- this character deserves the most hateful title at any cost.

8. Ammaji (NH10): This is another underrated negative character, played convincingly by Deepti Naval. The Sarpaanch of a village, who speaks about woman empowerment and the development of women, is actually after the life of her own daughter, along with her sons. This is all because the girl had the audacity to enter an intercaste relationship. Ammaji's hypocrisy reaches the extent when she lovingly gives shelter to the person after whose life his sons are, only to hand her over to those wolves.

Other negative characters that deserve special mention are Dhauli from Bhoomi, played by Sharad Kelkar; Regha and Shikha from Posham Pa, played by Sayani Gupta and Ragini Khanna, respectively; Kabir from Begum Jaan, played by Chunky Pandey, Sumitra Devi from Gulaab Gang played by Juhi Chawla and Prof. Anirudh from 404: Error Not Found played by Nishikant Kamath.
