5 Bengali Films that Deal with Old Age

Often old age is characterised by sickness, weakness and dependency. In Bengali movies too, we have mostly seen the same.  However, there are a few Bengali Films that have successfully shown that age is just a number and we can make the impossible possible at any age, if we have the heart to do so.  Here are the Top 5 Bengali Films that deal with Old age with much positivity.

1. Shukno Lanka: The film is loosely based on a real incident in the Bengali film industry. An aging junior artist who aims to get just one chance to prove his acting talent, finally gets justice when a renowned filmmaker chooses him as the lead actor for his ambitious project. The film revolves around that actor's shooting life and personal life throughout the film's making. Mithun Chakraborty is just phenomenal in the movie. Every scene he is in, is ruled by his expressive performance. The cute little moments of his celebrations with his wife on the tonga is so enjoyable and heartwarming. 


2. Posto: A retired school teacher is bringing up his grandson in the peaceful environment of Shantiniketan, while his son and daughter in law are struggling to make ends meet in the city. Clashes between the son and father raises due to differences in values, which leads to a court case for the grandson, Posto's custody. This movie, deals with a sensitive topic of aging being a hindrance to raise kids the proper way, and how with sheer mental strength and determination one can get anything, in spite of hurdles. In spite of its serious subject matter the film is out and out entertaining, and filled with strong performances of Soumitra Chatterji, Jishhu Sengupta, Paran Bandyopadhyay and many more.


3. Mukherjee Dar Bou: This is one of the lesser known films, although it is a very strong message to all the aging women, who have forgotten to live, first as a husband's wife and then as a mother of someone, somewhere in between their own name goes unnoticed and unseen. This is a story of such a woman, Mukherjee Dar bou, played with perfection by Anusua Majumder, who finally succeed in doing something, getting noticed by her own name.


4. Tonic: This is a very light-hearted drama about a retired man, leading a very protective and boring life with his overprotective son, who has an objection in everything his father aims to do. For his anniversary, the man plans a grand trip to Paris with his wife, with the help of Tonic, a perfect " Jugaadu" man who has a solution for all problems in life. How the man finally lived his best moments of life, after many failed attempts, is what the story about. Paran Bandyopadhyay and Dev make an outstanding Jodi, as the tourist and guide. There are many funny moments, although some scenes may seem to be overdramatic, but the film has won hearts of the masses, in spite of its flaws.


5. Bela Seshe: After more than 50 years of married life, a man decides to divorce his wife, leaving his huge family baffled. In spite of everyone's objection and questioning he remains unconvinced and determined. The ground for his divorce is that the purpose of the marriage is over with all their children been settled and established. What remains now is just an obligatory existence of everyday life without any emotional connection. Finally he succeeds to get a seperation, what is seen then is that although his wife manages to become independent, he struggles to make it alone.
