 Continuing from last week , we will explore the baddies of Bengali films through the years. Here, I would like to confess that I had hardly watched any Bengali films of the 80s and 90s, so I have no idea about the villains of that era. I had almost stopped watching Bengali films until very late in 2010 when Srijit Mukherjee came into the foray with his Cop Universe.  So, from 2010 till date, these are the iconic villainous characters that Bengali movies have given us. 8. Prabir Roy Choudhury from Baishe Srabon: Srijit Mukherjee came out with his first thriller, Baishe Srabon in 2010. Prasenjit Chatterjee played the role of Prabir Roy Choudhury, a highly intelligent ex-cop with a very foul mouth who was helping solve a series of serial killings in Kolkata. Bengali Films have been an integral part of Indian Cinema due to the presence of notable filmmakers. The presence of a villain in a film is mostly seen when the movie is categorized as an Action film. Of course, there are exceptions, like thrillers or crime films. However, Bengali movies often see a few spine-chilling villains from various genres of films. So today, let us dive into the Bad Men of Bengali films throughout the years: 1. Major Tripathi from 42 This 1951 film was set against the backdrop of the Quit India Movement of 1942 in a Bengal village. Noted actor Bikash Roy played the merciless and cruel Major Tripathi, a menacingly cunning individual with sadistic traits who took a special interest in torturing the revolting freedom fighters. His demeaning attitude towards those who were ready to die for the country makes one's blood boil. It's a significant change from the normal, very loud theatrical approach of acting from those days.  It's been a while since I have watched any good comedy films. We have grown up watching certain detective movies that had comedy as the main theme. The earliest of such movies that I happened to watch was the Beverly Hills Cop series with Eddie Murphy. There were some other detective comedy films that were released later on and went on to become superhits. Today, I have listed 5 such films: 1. Ace Ventura series: Jim Carrey starred in this 2 film series as Ace Ventura, an eccentric animal detective whose misadventures turn into successful accomplishments of complicated cases. The first film, Pet Detective, was a 1994 release where Ace (Carrey) was given the case to find out about a kidnapped Mastiff. The 2nd film, When Nature Calls, released in 1995, was about Ace solving a case of a white bat in Africa. Both the films were ridiculously funny. Bengali films have given some of the finest works in Indian Cinema throughout the ages. Bengal has been gifted with noted filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and Budhadeb Dasgupta. In recent times, the legacy has been continued by contemporaries like Rituporno Ghosh, Srijit Mukherjee, and Anjan Dutt, amongst others. It is surprising that there are very few works of Shakespeare that have been adapted on screen in Bengal.
