Top 8 Supernatural Bengali Web Series to watch on Bhoot Chaturdashi
Continuing with the spooky week, once again. And there's a reason for that. It is because of an age-old tradition from Bengal called Bhoot Chaturdashi. The West has Halloween, and we have Bhoot Chaturdashi ( Naraka Chaturdashi). This festival is not as popular as Kali Puja in West Bengal, but many village areas still follow it a day before Kali Puja. Bhoot Chaturdashi is a festival that is celebrated to worship and remember ancestors. It also marks a way to show respect to the departed. Some evolved rituals started revolving around activities to ward off evil spirits. Some believe the reason for lighting fourteen diyas is that the festival falls on the 14th day of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Karthik, the most active Night of the Spirits. And to ward off these dark entities, 14 diyas are lit as a gesture to ward off evil and welcome the good.
Whether we celebrate this festival or not, there's no harm in watching some web series revolving around the Supernatural. So here is a list of 8 scary Bengali web series to watch on Bhoot Chaturdashi:
1. Cartoon: This is a very old web series on Hoichoi. I enjoyed the concept of a cartoonist's unsettling behaviour revolving around his own art and apartment. It is an interesting psychological horror, starring Mainak Datta and Payel Sarkar. What is the cartoonist Aritra dealing with? Are the whispers he hears and the shadows he sees real or just hallucinations?
This 2017 web series has the answers. I found it quite interesting.
2. Taranath Tantrik: Taranath Tantrik is a very popular character in Bengali Horror literature. Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay created some very scary stories around the character, who is supposed to be an exorcist. This web series used a very different execution, presenting the entire series in a docu-drama style. This was a very smart way, as it made it appear more realistic. It has also shown the making of Taranath Tantric from an ordinary man.
3. Bhaduri Moshai Franchise: Those who are fond of Bengali Horror Literature are not new to this name, as it comes from the powerful pen of Nirendranath Chakraborty. Bhaduri Moshai is a very powerful individual who can communicate with the dead. There have been 3 seasons: Nikash Chhaya Seasons 1 and 2, and Parnashavarir Shaap Season 1.
The series has Chairanjeet Chakraborty playing the lead role, supported by Gaurav Chakraborty, Kanchan Mullick and Surangana Bandopadhyay. It is a spooky series, involving cults and demon worship.
4. Bhog: This was a series that managed to give me the chills. With Anirban Bhattacharya and Parno Mitra, it deals with a mysterious statue of a Goddess that is bought as a collector's item. However, the man who brings it home faces strange happenings, and gradually his life falls apart.
This is one of the most engaging Bengali horror web series.
5. Chupkotha: This is yet another quite scary series, starring Parno Mitra in the lead role. The two seasons deal with an investigative crime journalist, whose search leads her to brush up against the paranormal. Some of the scenes have been shot in foggy, mountainous locations, elevating the mystery.
This is a must-watch.
6. Roktofolok: Saswata Chatterjee plays a scholar, Agambagish, with special powers. His intuition brings him to the Dasgupta family to warn them about an upcoming danger. The series is quite thrilling, and the encounter between Agambagish and the evil Tenia is quite interesting.
7. OddBhuturey: Eight supernatural and mysterious stories in eight episodes- this series doesn't give you any scope to get bored. The stories are very interesting and often scary, mostly dealing with themes of psychological horror.
If you are somebody who likes short films, this is for you.
8. Nishir Daak: A few friends visit the remnants of an old haunted mansion to experience some very scary things. This is an engaging series, with flashbacks filled with betrayals and sins committed against a bright woman out of jealousy.
Starring Surangana Bandopadhyay and Satyam Bandopadhyay, this series is an interesting watch.
