Top 5 Bengali Classic Comedy Films to Watch this World Smile Day
October 3 is celebrated as World Smile Day. Smile- a gesture that has almost lost its run in today's world. We seldom see people smiling at each other. Isn't it something we should practice more and more? Although I have no intention of making this a preaching session about the importance of a smile, I can do better by compiling a list of some Classic Bengali Comedy films that are sure to bring a smile.
1. Sharey Chuattar: This 1953 movie is a hilarious comedy featuring Tulsi Chakraborty, Malina Devi, Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, and Bhanu Bandopadhyay in leading roles. The story revolves around a hostel owner in Kolkata whose family lives in a village. The hostel is primarily occupied by bachelor tenants who become intrigued by a beautiful young woman who moves in with her family. One of the tenants develops a romantic relationship with her, facing opposition from his friends. Bhanu Bandopadhyay's iconic line "Masima Malpo Khamu" has since become a memorable part of Bengali comedy.
2. Bhanu Pelo Lottery: This 1958 movie features Bhanu Bandopadhyay in the lead role as a simple village toy maker who accidentally wins a lottery and must travel to the city to collect his winnings. Upon his arrival, he faces unexpected challenges as he is pursued and deceived by opportunistic business investors. The film explores how he confronts this threat, which is disguised as a form of friendship.
3. Personal Assistant: In the 1959 film, Bhanu Bandopadhyay portrays Ramapada, an educated man hired as a personal assistant to a lady industrialist. Working in a predominantly female office, he encounters various challenges and bullying. Despite his excellent performance, his boss remains unsatisfied. The story follows how he ultimately wins her heart both professionally and personally.
4. Basanta Bilap: A women's hostel for working professionals becomes the focus of a group of bachelors in the area. Although the two parties initially clash and have differing views, many members from both sides secretly develop romantic relationships with each other, unbeknownst to their respective leaders. This 1972 film stars Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Aparna Sen in the lead roles, with a supporting cast that includes Anup Kumar, Rabi Ghosh, and Chinmay Ray. Featuring memorable music and outstanding performances, this film is definitely a must-see.
5. Mouchak: Uttam Kumar and Sabitri Chattopadhyay portray a middle-aged childless couple whose lives revolve around their younger brother, Bocha. Their world becomes chaotic when Bocha leaves home to start a new job in another town. Every unmarried girl’s father seems to target Bocha as a potential son-in-law. The story unfolds to reveal whether Bocha can escape these pressures and find his true love. Ranjit Mallick delivers an outstanding performance as Bocha in this delightful comedy of errors.
