It Never Ended
I was sleeping when a sudden shrieking sound woke me up. The lights were turned off, and I was thirsty. I walked to the living room and grabbed the water bottle from the dining table. Again I heard that same sound, this time closer. It was like some bird screaming out, with a lot of rage. I thought maybe some owl or bat was out for their nighttime hunt and calling out!! But once I returned to my bed, the sound became so close that it almost felt from inside the room. I got up, scared, sweating- what was it!! I could hear something dragging itself from under my bed. I froze in fear. I was staring blankly at the wall across, not able to move an inch. The dragging sound moved as if it came out from under my bed. I could feel a huge shadow forming beside my bed. I went totally numb. It felt like something was holding my limbs tight and I had no nerves to look at what was happening just beside me. The shadow made its way towards the edge of the bed, standing just in front of me. It had huge black wings, the face of a human being and the limbs of a lizard. It was smiling at me, its uneven pair of crooked pointed teeth reminded me of an alligator. With a croaky, creepy voice it said, " You can not hide, you can not run. Wherever you go I will be watching you." Then it laughed out with a harsh voice, got hold of my legs with its coarse hands and started to shake them.
The 6 'O'clock alarm was ringing. I got up quickly with a bad headache. Oh God, what a scary nightmare that was!! I had to hurry up or else I would miss the 7:30 bus to the office. After getting over with the morning chores, shower and breakfast, I packed my lunch box. I left my apartment at 7:15 to leave the keys with the neighbours downstairs, the Patels, for my maid to pick up later. Patel Aunty would start boasting about her balcony garden and I would have to stop her in between, reminding her of my bus timing. I rang the doorbell and Patel Aunty opened the door. "Good morning Aunty. Here, the keys!" " Did you sleep well last night?"she asked with a croaked voice as I handed her the keys, That was something new coming from her. In all these 2 years I had been staying here, she had never talked about anything other than her garden and the flowers there. I looked at her with surprise. She was smiling at me - with crooked sharp teeth, like that of an alligator. What was happening, I ran out from there. I could hear from behind a harsh voice, " Watching you"
I ran towards the bus stand, it was 7:30 Here came my office bus. I went in and looked at the passengers. Oh, all my known office colleagues!! I went to my usual seat, next to my colleague Harish. "Hey good morning Harish," I greeted him like always, while settling myself on the seat. The bus started. I could feel Harish looking at me from the seat next to me. I looked at him, " Did you sleep well last night?" Harish smiled at me with a crooked pointed pair of teeth. I got up and ran to the end of the bus. It was difficult as the bus was running at a very high speed. I stood there somehow and saw all the passengers looking at me- Smiling with crooked sharp teeth like a hoard of alligators. Their harsh voices almost screamed out together "We are watching you."

This gave me chills! The way the dream blends into reality is so unsettling and gripping. I could feel the tension building with every line, and that ending, absolutely spine-tingling! Such a vivid and haunting narrative.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading. Glad you liked.
DeleteNice story. Has the creepy feeling of something unusual. The sentence says it all so ominously, "we are watching you."

ReplyDeleteThis is such a fantastic story, Rubenna. It makes me shiver. Such a creepy vibe makes me more tensed. Waiting for part two.

DeleteThis was scary! How nightmares start chasing us in light and daily life and then start living our lives. Terrifying.
ReplyDeleteTrue that. Thanks for reading.
DeleteI hope I don't get the same nightmare (I'm reading this just before going to bed) and don't have eyes watching me tomorrow!!
ReplyDeleteHaha, living through nightmares is scary.
DeleteOh yeah! Many nightmares creep into reality and I totally get this story. Your writing chilled me to the bone! Keeping it open-ended makes sense in this case.

DeleteHoly hell! I hope there's another part coming to follow up where this whole thing turns out to be nightmare or we get to know what's happening exactly. Because ab to mujhe iska sapna aane hi waala hai and it will continue if I don't get closure. So please expand the story!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the fear and thrill by the way. Keep writing more such stories
