Top 4 Must-See Bengali Biographical Movies about Iconic Filmmakers #WriteAPageADay
I pride myself on being a Bengali film enthusiast, and just like any movie lover, I like to write about Bengali movies. It would be an immense pleasure if I could make someone aware of good films in Bengal. Today, I have decided to make a recommendation list for Bengali biographical films about iconic filmmakers.
1. Aparajito (2022): Based upon the initial struggle of Satyajit Ray's filmmaking journey, this film delves deep into the obstacles he had to face, including budget issues. Directed by Anik Datta, it stars Jeetu Kamal as Aparajito Roy, a character based on the life of the ace filmmaker Ray. Those aware of Bengali television shows can recognise Jeetu as a powerful performer whose acting prowls have been restricted to the small screen. However, with the opportunity given on his shoulders to carry out such a significant role of a stalwart on his shoulders, he has owned the character. From his physical transformation to his voice and image makeover, the actor has given his best in the role. One cannot unmistake the similarities between the actor's portrayal of Ray and the real Satyajit Ray.
2. Meghe Dhaka Tara (2013): Fans of Bengali films are not new to the name Ritwik Ghatak. His depiction of the imbalance in socio-economic structure, the extreme challenges that life throws at the common people, and how one has to accept it have been praised by cinema lovers. In this film, Saswata Chatterji plays the role of Nilkantha Bagchi, a character based on Ghatak. It revolves around his life in a mental asylum where he finishes writing a play. Directed by Kamaleswar Mukherjee, this movie focuses on Saswata at his best. The film is in black and white to effectively bring out the then political environment (Naxal movement) and highlight the protagonist's inconsistent mind.
3. Padatik (2024): Srijit Mukherji's cinematic excellence come to foray after a long gap with this film, based on the life and valuable contribution of ace filmmaker Mrinal Sen in cinema. Portrayed impeccably by Bangladeshi actor Chanchal Chowdhury, Sen's character comes to life in this film. This film truly brings out the effort and passion the filmmaker put into every project, irrespective of its future financial gain. Sen's ideology of considering cinema as an effective art form to reach an audience by highlighting the truth and only the harsh reality is the subject of this movie.
4. Chalchitra Ekhon (2024): A mentee's biggest gift to his mentor can easily be described by sighting the example of this film. Anjan Dutt plays Kunal Sen., a character based on Mrinal Sen, and Sawon Chakraborty plays Ranjan, a character based on Dutt himself in his younger years. It shows how they both connect through cinema and how their bond grows over the years. Directed by Dutt, the film honestly portrays the duo's mark in parallel cinema.
